Become a School Counselor or a Mental Health Counselor
NYU Steinhardt offers two online master’s programs in counseling to prepare you for a fulfilling career helping others, whether you’re working with pre-K–12 students or people across the life span.
The online MA program in Counseling and Guidance prepares you to work in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country, helping children and adolescents achieve their personal and academic goals. You will choose a concentration in either school counseling or bilingual school counseling, which provides additional training for working with non-native English speakers.
The online MA program in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness prepares you to become a clinical mental health counselor who works directly with individuals and groups. After achieving professional licensure, you may pursue employment in a variety of settings including mental health centers, hospitals, and private practice.
As a Counseling@NYU student, you will:
- Learn directly from NYU Steinhardt faculty who are leaders in the school counseling and mental health fields.
- Take live, online classes and complete rigorous assignments that provide a foundation in counseling knowledge.
- Gain hands-on counseling experience while working at NYU-approved field placement sites near your community.
- Join NYU's alumni network of more than 470,000 graduates who share your commitment to academic and professional excellence.
Both the online master of arts program in Counseling and Guidance and the online master of arts program in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at NYU Steinhardt are accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for the period of January 2015 through January 2025.
